Kenaz - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

When you light a candle to create sacred space, you are basically invoking the power of Kenaz.

Kenaz follows Raidho and represents both our inner light of wisdom and understanding, as well as the lesson that lead to a deeper understanding in the world around us. When we set off on our journey (Raidho), we need a torch to guide us - Kenaz is that torch.

Etymologically, Kenaz is a super interesting word which relates to the Germanic words for king, knowledge, kin (relatives/ancestry), cunt (sic!), wisdom and the craft. According to Freya Aswynn, the two main deities associated with this rune are Heimdal and Freya. I feel Thor is a good fit too, he's the God of thunder and lightning after all... and lightning is what brought FIRE to man.

When humanity harnessed the power of fire, it took a ginormous evolutional leap. Fire brings people together. For thousand of years we have gathered around the fire, passed on wild tales and wisdom alike by torchlight, and helped the sick and …

Raidho - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Raidho is a rune I associate with the Norse gods Tyr and Thor. Etymologically it ties in with riding and raiding, as well as with the germanic word for law/justice. It's a rune of forward movement.

Raidho is associated with taking action and some would consider that a masculine quality, however, I also associate this rune with The Chariot (Cancer/Water) and Justice (Libra/Air) so I feel that while it is 'fiery'/masculine in some respects it is not a rune of pure Fire.

I also don't feel that Raidho is associated with a particular direction (though I would go with South if pushed) but rather with whichever direction you are facing for the trajectory you are on (or wish to be on). It describes forward-motion in any direction. If you are moving in the right direction, you have most likely made an informed decision to move in that direction with help from the previous rune, Ansuz.

Ansuz - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Ansuz is Odin's rune and the fourth rune in the first aett. It corresponds with the letter A and relates etymologically with the word as (aesir) and os (mouth). Ansuz is the rune of Divine Communication.

Elementally it corresponds with Air and the direction is East. The power of this rune is strongest between dawn and noon. We turn to the East when we need inspiration, freedom, a new beginning or a solution to an intellectual problems. On the easterly winds, the wisdom of Odin blows the cobwebs off our mind.

Ansuz also relates to ancestral wisdom and messages from beyond the grave. Ansuz protects the mind and keeps us from worrying about the future. It reminds us that whatever we are facing now, our ancestors faced that and worse and still, here we are! Ansuz is also a reminder that we can be harbingers of doom or messengers of hope... and it is our choice.

Thurisaz - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Thurisaz is the third rune in the first aett (Frey's aett) of the Elder Futhark rune alphabet. Like Uruz, it is a rune of enormous power and it relates to the giant Ymir from whose body the earth and all life on it was created in the Norse creation myth. 'Thurs' means frost giant in Old Norse. The frost giants are in constant battle with the forces of order and creation, yet without these Elemental beings, there would be no life.

Thurisaz is a rune of adversity (that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger) and resistance. It is also a rune that can help us break through any resistance. It relates both to the world of the Jotun and the world of the Aesir where it becomes Thor's hammer, bane of all foes and obstacles. It is creation out of chaos and destruction all rolled into one.

This rune is known as 'thorn' in the Saxon rune row and it is shaped like thorn. The colour associations are deep red, dark brown, black and grey.

Uruz - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Uruz is a rune of power and it is the the second rune of Frey's aett. The original meaning of the glyph is 'aurochs,' the primeval wild ox that our hunter ancestors prized so highly. Because our association with the aurochs is much older than that with domesticated cattle, some argue that Uruz is the original first letter of the rune alphabet. Hence 'uthark' vs futhark.

Etymologically uruz also links to our origins. Any word begining with 'ur' in Swedish, for instance, speak of ancient origins. For instance, the word ancient itself is uråldrig in Swedish.

My personal take on this rune is that there is a much deeper meaning for this rune which deals with our genetic origins - Origins that are coded in our blood. On this level, we are looking at true human DNA versus hybrid empathy bypass (psycopathic) DNA that came in later in order to manipulate Earth's population.

The reason the runes are such a powerful tool is that they can help free us from entrainm…

Fehu - Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark rune alphabet and the first rune in the Frey's aett. There are three aettir (rune rows), with eight runes in each row. Frey's aett deals with the fundamentals of society and what you must know to manage life in physical reality before you can progress to higher spiritual learning.

Fehu is the rune of moveable wealth. In the old Norse society, moveable wealth equated to cattle which is the literal meaning of the word 'fehu.' In Swedish, we still have the word 'fä' meaning farm animals.

Fehu can also be associated with Auðhumbla the primordial cow and sustainer of life. It was she who fed Ymir, the frost giant who rose up from Ginnugagap and from whose body the world was created. Ginnungagap is the eternal void to which all of life returns before a new cycle of creation begins.

Fehu corresponds with The Magician, The Empress, The Sun, Ace of Pentacles and 6 of Pentacles in the Tarot. It's one of the main runes of t…
